| Original Abstract | In this interview, Shà Simpson is a 33 year old Black lesbian woman who discusses her childhood in New Albany as a Jehovah’s Witness. Simpson shares her experience of dating women while closeted and buying more masculine clothing in high school. She attended Northeast Mississippi Community College before transferring to the University of Mississippi to study journalism. In her junior year of college, Simpson was outed as a lesbian to her parents and disfellowshipped from the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She credits her godmother and professor Alysia Steele and the university counseling services with helping her cope with the loss of her religious and family support systems. Simpson is an active member of the LGBTQ+ community in Oxford today and discusses her experience as a Black lesbian in Oxford. She also touches on the impact of the 2022 disappearance of Jay Lee, a Black gay man who was heavily visible in the community. Simpson speaks about her relationship with her girlfriend and her girlfriend’s three children. | Original Full Text | Field Notes — Shà Simpson Interviewee: Shà SimpsonInterviewer: Sam StreetInterview Date: July 16, 2024Location: Music Building, University of Mississippi, Oxford, MSLength: 1:44:57THE INTERVIEWEE: Shà Simpson is a 33 year old Black lesbian woman who was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness by her parents in New Albany, Mississippi. Simpson studied Journalism at the University of Mississippi and was outed as a lesbian to her parents during her junior year of college. Simpson has lived in Oxford since her graduation from the university and is an active member of the LGBTQ+ community in Oxford. THE INTERVIEWER: Sam Street is an undergraduate student at Yale University who conducted this interview as part of the NSF REU program: Interdisciplinary Study of the Politics of Place at the University of Mississippi. Sam is studying American Studies and History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERVIEW: Street reached out to Simpson about participating in the Queer Mississippi Oral History Project after hearing her share her story at a storytelling event conducted by Anubis Improv called Chronicle: Pride that was held at the Powerhouse in Oxford in June 2024. In her oral history, Simpson spoke about her experience growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness, coming out, her godparents who supported her after graduation, and her experiences as a Black lesbian in Oxford today. The interview was conducted in a graduate student office in the Music Building on the University of Mississippi’s campus. There is a loud air conditioner that can be heard on the recording throughout, but it does not interfere with the listener’s ability to hear Simpson. The first approximately two minutes of the interview were re-recorded due to an error with the backup recording equipment. The interview was conducted uninterrupted. |
